The Hurricane represented a transition from the older constructional methods using a framework of metal braced by wooden formers and the "monocoque" metal construction employed in e.g. the Spitfire. In many ways a monoplane development of the Hawker Fury bi-plane, the Hurricane proved to be tough and reliable in combat. "J Jimmy" in the novel, which is a "rogue" machine (see the extract), does not seem to be typical of the type!
The Hawker Hurricane's major specifications were::
Speed: 521 Kph (324 mph)
Wingspan: 14.93m (49ft)
Length: 9.57m (31ft 5in)
Engine: Rolls Royce Merlin
