The prototype of this type first flew in 1936, the first production type (Bf110A) in 1937. The types in general use at the time of the Battle of Britain were the Bf 110C and Bf 110D - the latter having long range drop tanks carried below the wings.
The Zerstoerer ("Destroyer") concept of a fighter aircraft that technically outclassed its opponents was a dream of Goering's which the Me 110 failed to fulfil. During the opening phase of World War 2, the Me 110 proved a formidable fighter when matched against foes which were technically obsolescent. However, it was outclassed by the Spitfire and Hurricane during the Battle of Britain. However, the Me 110 found its niche as a night fighter, which role it pursued with success until the end of the war.
The Me Bf 110C major specifications were::
Speed: 560 Km/h (349 mph).
Wingspan: 16.2 m (53ft)
Length: 12m (39fgt 6")
Engines: 2 x Daimler Benz 601A
